Episode 1: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 1
During an unexpected power outage at Horizon tower, the resident of no. 2003, Zhong Mei Bao, is murdered. The police begin their investigations from Xie Bao Luo, the security guard who found the body. Xie Bao Luo is a security guard but five years before, he was a university graduate, working at a bank, getting ready to get married and start a family. Until he hit a woman with his car. The woman's family is very poor and cannot pay the hospital expenses, feeling sorry and guilty, Xie Bao Luo helps them. Despite his fiance's protests and evidence that the family might be swindling him, he decides to pay a 300,000 yuan damages money to them. However, the family does not stop there and they still call him with requirements for money. When he refuses, they sue him anyway and he is due to pay almost two million yuan to them. In light of this, he loses all his savings, his job, and his fiance. He met Zhong Mei Bao on her arrival day at Horizon Tower during another power outage two years before and helped her with her luggage. He told her his life story and she felt very sorry for him. They became friends, according to Xie Bao Luo. Detective Zhong does not trust Xie Bao Luo and his story and questions his relationship with Zhong Mei Bao and the authenticity of his story about his past life. Episode 2: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 2
The investigation continues. Detective Zhong and Yang search Mei Bao's home to find things that may be clues. They find an entire closet full of expensive unused gifts. In addition to that, there is one LP and an unusual, uncomfortable chair. Yang follows the lead for the LP and discovers it to be worth a considerable amount (50,000 yuan, maybe even more). Realizing this, she sets up the buyer to start an auction for the LP to draw out possible suspects. Officer Yang overhears two of her colleagues discussing sexual assault allegations against Detective Zhong. Investigating Xie Bao Luo confirms his story and his alibi but Zhong still suspects him. In the second interview, Xie Bao Luo tells them that he was actually interested in a different girl, not Mei Bao. Throughout the episode, there are flashbacks to conversations Mei Bao had with Bao Luo. In one conversation, she told him about her difficult childhood. Her mother's many love affairs and their failures. Detective Zhong keeps on pushing Xie Bao Luo but he does not reveal anything new and instead becomes more defensive. Episode 3: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 3
The autopsy report shows Carbon monoxide poisoning. The detectives deduce that she was first knocked out and then poisoned. The investigation continues with an interview with Lin Da Sen, Mei Bao's neighbor, and landlord. Mr. Lin is an architect. He reveals that he and Mei Bao were neighbors in their childhood and he frequently hung out with her and her brother. He also reveals Mei Bao may have been a kleptomaniac since childhood. Lin Da Sen insists that they were not romantically involved. However, the detectives find out that he personally bought an expensive mattress for her loft and they suspect there was more to their relationship. Flashback to two years earlier, Da Sen's wedding: Da Sen's wife's family are rich and prestigious and he feels out of his depth around them. Episode 4: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 4
Detective Zhong asks Lin Da Sen about the mattress and he says Mei Bao had trouble falling asleep so he bought her a bed. He eventually admits that she seduced him and they had an affair, during which he got her the loft she stayed at. They then bring Mo Li in for questioning. She tells Yang that her marriage is an unhappy one and Da Sen has stolen her designs. She says that because she is a woman, her father didn't think she could inherit his company so he allowed the plagiarism to go on and helped Da Sen. Eventually, Mo Li gave up her career in order to get pregnant. Mei Bao's phone logs show three frequent numbers; Lin Da Sen, Xie Bao Luo, and an unknown number. Episode 5: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 5
The next questioning is with Lin Meng Yu, the real estate agent. He confirms that Mei Bao and Boa Luo were friends and he never saw Da Sen with Mei Bao. Dusting the apartment reveals no fingerprints. Officer Yang finds out that Lin Meng Yu has the keys to many of the apartments and can go in and out without the knowledge of the owners. Detective Zhong talks to Ding Xiao Ling from 23rd floor who used to be Meng Yu's mistress. The two of them snuck into apartments and roleplayed. Meng Yu also reveals that Mrs. Lin is the one who bought unit 2003, not her husband. Per Yang's suggestion, the forensics dust the ventilation duct and find two different fingerprints there. Episode 6: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 6
Meng Yu had actually been peeping at the residents through the vent system. He frequently watched Mei Bao and saw Da Sen with her. He also tells them that Mo Li signed the rent contract with Mei Bao, not Da Sen. Detective Zhong looks into Madam Ye, the housekeeper, and finds out her victim is the one who hired her a lawyer. Furthermore, she had been hired by Mei Bao for the New Year's party. During that same party, Mo Li and Mei Bao come face to face while wearing the exact same outfit. Zhong and Yang meet with the agoraphobic writer who lives in 2004. She is a writer who has published two novels but her third novel's release was delayed. She had a close relationship with Mei Bao. Most of the episode is segments from Wu Ming Yue's novel. The novel follows a pair of siblings who are blessed by celestial gods but are trapped by a jealous and capricious demon lord and suffer a lot. Episode 8: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 8
The second novel follows the main character into adulthood. She saves her brother's life but is trapped by the demon lord. She eventually falls in love with him. Confused by the ending, Yang seeks out Wu Ming Yue to learn about the third novel, only to be informed there won't be one. With Yang's help, Ming Yue finally goes outside and promises to email the ending of the trilogy for Yang. The story was inspired by what Mei Bao told Ming Yue about her childhood and the abuse her stepfather exacted against her and her brother. After looking for Mei Bao's brother, they finally find a clue to his whereabouts. Her brother is actually the same boy from the alleged human trafficking case and Madam Ye. Episode 9: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 9
The police look into Mei Bao's relationship with madam Ye. Officer Yang finally hears the full accusations against Zhong. The lawyer who accused him was married to a sexual assault suspect and then she claimed to be assaulted by Zhong which ruin the case against her husband. Yang believes he is innocent but framed. They interview all the households that Madam Ye worked for. All of whom only have good things to say about her; including her proficiency in English and emergency medical procedure abilities. They find out her real identity is Li Gui Lan and used to work as a surgeon in the same province that Mei Bao used to live in. They eventually get a chance to go and question Ye Mei Li in prison. Episode 10: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 10
Doctor Li (Ye Mei Li) met the Zhong family in the emergency room when Zhong Jie came in with bruises and cuts, claiming she had accidentally fallen. Young Mei Bao tells Doctor Li that her mother's husband beat her and Li tells her to call the police if it ever happened again. It did and Mei Bao called the police, and he gets arrested. From that day onwards, Doctor Li gets entangled in the family's affairs. After many incidents, Zhong Jie leaves her husband and moves in with Mei Li with the kids. For a while, things are good but then Yan Yong Yuan returns and starts harassing her. They decide to run away somewhere he can't find them but he finds out and stops Zhong Jie, leading to her suicide. Episode 11: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 11
Yang and Zhong go to speak with Yan Jun. Ah Jun was a musical genius and ever since they were young, he could play any piece on the piano by listening to it. They used to dress him as a girl so he could pretend to be their friend playing the piano in order to get some money. Officer Yang tries to convince Yan Jun to report his father and he gets upset. His manager files a complaint against Yang. Detective Zhong and Yang visit Mei Bao and Ah Jun's school instead and through them find Mr. Song who in the past, had given his piano to the kids. Episode 12: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 12
Yan Jun files a report against Yan Yong Yuan. He explains that two years before when he had his first tour, his father found him. He shows up at his house and threatens him with a photo of Mei Bao. He asks for blackmail money in exchange for not publishing the photos. Yan Jun gives him money, hoping he would go away but he keeps asking for more until a year earlier, he refuses to give him more money and Yan Yong Yuan says he'll kill his sister. Meanwhile, Yan Yong Yuan shows up inside Mo Li's house and asks them to tell the truth about Mei Bao's murder and that he is innocent. Zhong and Yang are called to Horizon tower and confirm the man to be Yan Yong Yuan. However, they still do not have hard evidence for his arrest. The record that they used as bait is finally sold but the buyer was an ordinary person. They check the record again and find Yan Yong Yuan's finger print on it. Episode 13: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 13
Yan tells the police about how he met Zhong Jie. He tells them a sob story and blames everything that ever happened to him on Zhong Jie and Mei Bao. Episode 14: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 14
Yan goes to a Television show to "tell their story" of father and son losing each other. While doing research on the TV show, Yang finds the "pick up artist" pattern in Yong Yuan's behavior. They also guess that his former boss is Wang Hong and so decide to meet with her. She tells them that he was a scammer and she is not surprised Zhong Jie is dead because of him. They also find out Yong Yuan was stabbed by Mei Bao on the day of Zhong Jie's death. Yan Jun decides to go on the show to face Yong Yuan. Police find out Yong Yuan plans to flee the country the following day. While following the lead, Yang figures out the child in the photo is not actually Mei Bao. It was Yan Jun. Episode 15: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 15
When her relatives find out about the stabbing, they send Mei Bao to a boarding school where she meets Mi Li and Xiao Ling. Later the school gets closed and Yong Yuan finds Mei Bao. She goes on the run and in order to keep Yong Yuan off Ah Jun's track, she does not contact them. She works at a cafe and secretly follows her brother's success from afar until Madam Ye finds her. On Mo Li's wedding night, she sees the cafe space in Horizon tower and decides to open her own cafe near her friends. Madam Ye tells Ah Jun about where she is. Back in the present timeline, Yong Yuan survives the stab but Yan Jun is in trouble for it, anyway. They ask Yong Yuan about his whereabouts in the past year and he says he was imprisoned by Mei Bao and she had two accomplices. Li Mo Li and Ding Xiao Ling. The women tell the police that Yan Jun's fingers became injured due to overworking to pay the hush money to Yong yuan. Mei Bao gives him the money he wanted but he exposes Madam Ye. He tells them he will speak for her if they give him 10 million yuan. They get into a fight. Yong Yuan gets injured. They decide to hide him in Mei Bao's house and plan everything around this. According to Yong Yuan, Mei Bao tried to kill him and herself. He also placed Mo Li and Xiao Ling at the scene. The women refuse to admit to the truth and Mo Li begs Yang to let Yan Yong Yuan be the murderer in the case. Episode 16: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower Episode 16
Detective Zhong and Officer Yang have a conversation about doing the right thing or the righteous thing. In conclusion to which, Yang decides to quit her job. The next day they give the final report about Mei Bao's suicide. As next of kin, Ah Jun gets a report as well. Yang tells him about what Mei Bao was wearing in her last moments and Ah Jun becomes agitated. Suddenly Yang realizes Meng Yu's ex-wife seemed to know what Mei Bao was wearing without them telling her. She goes to speak with her and Shen Mei Qi admits that she was in the vent and she saw everything and even recorded it. Mei Bao intended to kill herself along with Yong Yuan but her brother's call changes her mind and she lets Yong yuan go instead. However, he kills her and makes it look like it was suicide.
