In 18th century Beijing, during the 6th year of Qianlong Emperor's reign, Wei Ying Luo enters the Forbidden City as an embroiderer to investigate the truth behind her older sister's rape and murder. Believing that Imperial Guard Fuca Fuheng is the prime suspect, Ying Luo schemingly approaches his sister, Empress Fuca Rongyin, and is transferred to work as her maid. Quickly taking on a liking to Ying Luo's streetsmart and plucky attitude, the kind-hearted Empress teaches her to read and write and becomes her benefactor, while Fuca Fuheng falls in love with her and supports her investigation. Realizing that the Fuca siblings are innocent of the crime, Ying Luo moves her attention to the other people in the palace in hopes of finding the perpetrator, all while protecting the Empress from the harem's conspiracies, as she rises through the ranks. Wei Ying Luo encounters Fuca Fuheng, the head of the Imperial guards and brother to the empress. On behalf of the emperor, he tries to get the empress out of her deep depression following the loss of her child. Though Wei Ying Luo is able to get out of trouble with Consort Gao, Madam Fan and Jin Xiu plot to get her removed from Forbidden City. For the empress's birthday, she receives gifts from all of the Houses. The House of Embroidery is to give her a gown embroidered with special peacock feather threads. Jealous that Wei Ying Luo was chosen to embroider the gown, someone steals the threads and destroys the gown. Unsatisfied, Wei Ying Luo puts herself in a precarious situation to avenge her sister. The emperor is caught in the middle of Wei Ying Luo and his brother Prince He. It becomes clear that though Prince He raped Wei Ying Luo's sister; he was not her murderer. Dowager Yu targets Ying Luo and Fuca Fuheng comes to her aid in the nick of time. Ying Luo sends a message to Dowager Yu indicating she is not afraid, but the dowager makes it clear to Ying Luo that she is a force to be reckoned with. The Empress reveals her reasons for protecting Wei Ying Luo to the emperor. Shocked and angry, he storms away. Bats swarm the empress's banquer, causing injuries and confusion. Consort Gao injures the empress and injures herself to evade blame. Wei Ying Luo returns to serve the empress, helping her recover the use of her legs which had deteriorated during her coma. Due to her unconventional manner and creativity, Ying Luo wins the heart of the emperor and is promoted to Consort Ling. Chun Wang helps Ying Luo by bringing physician Ye to examine Yong Qi. The truth comes out, absolving Ying Luo, while the perpetrators are punished.
