Princess Jung Myung was the only direct descendant of King Seon Jo still alive and when she was born, her birth was celebrated around the palace. She had the sweetest smile a baby could have. Queen In Mok was relieved that she had a baby girl instead of a boy. According to the seer Nam Sa Go, the baby she carried would become the true ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, a king of kings and have a princess proved the prophecy to be wrong. But the turbulent times took a heavy toll on Princess Jung Myung. Upon the death of King Seon Jo, Gwang Hae ascended the throne and his first order of business was to eliminate Prince Yeong Chang and banish Queen In Mok from the palace. Then his next target was Princess Jung Myung. When In Mok learned that her daughter’s life was in danger, she sent her into hiding. But assassins tracked Jung Myung down. Through the heroic sacrifice of her bodyguard, Jung Myung was put on a boat that sailed adrift in the sea. Meanwhile, the bodyguard and nanny set their boat ablaze and died to fool the assassins. Jung Myung witnessed her nanny and bodyguard consumed by the flames. Adrift on the boat, Jung Myung lost consciousness and was picked up by a merchant boat crossing to Dejima in Japan. She was sold as a slave. To survive in the hostile environment she hid the fact that she was a princess. She also vanquished her memories of ever being a princess so that she could focus on how to get revenge. Posing as a boy, Jung Myung worked as a laborer in the sulfur mine. But she discovered hope in the depths of her despair. It was a friendship between Ja Gyung that helped her cling to life. But she never lost her focus on returning to Joseon one day and bringing the downfall of Gwang Hae who had taken everything away from her. Then an opportunity arose. She began peddling information and secrets in the sulfur mines. Leveraging her strategic location, she followed the Joseon delegation visiting Japan back to Joseon. Episode 1: Splendid Politics Episode 1

Gwanghae meets with his ailing father, the aforementioned King Seonjo, who is more than dubious about his son’s efforts to rebuild Changdeok Palace. He sees it as Gwanghae’s way of preparing the palace for when he will reign, though his son tries to gently affirm that he has it all wrong. After the King announces the preparation of deposing Gwanghae the political leader of the Great Northern faction, Jung In-hong meets with the king on Gwanghae’s behalf, while Gwanghae kneels in silent protest outside the throne room. Seonjo takes it personally to mean that Gwanghae will be a better king than him. And that’s exactly why he wants to depose him. After some time gwanghae wants to speak with his father when he witnesses him dying. The palace is thrown into uproar as everyone mobilizes to fetch the royal doctor, leaving Gwanghae to tend to his father while they wait. He coaches his father on breathing calmly, but when his father asks for water, Gwanghae hesitates…

Queen In Mok had the power to hold onto the royal seal and she’s gathering herself for the sake of protecting her children. Her father confirmed her suspicion that someone tried to assassinate Yeong Chang the night before and both of them thought that it was Gwang Hae’s doing when in fact it was Yi Cheom's doing. Jung Myung had hidden herself in the garden even though it’s way past midnight and Gwang Hae found the little princess alone beside the pond. Everyone literally dropped their jaw when Gwang Hae and Jung Myung appeared at the queen’s quarters holding hands. They had a private meeting afterwards, and Gwang Hae apologized. He vowed to ensure that no one could harm Yeong Chang and Jung Myung. on the next morning Queen In Mok wished that Gwang Hae would not leave the throne empty for too long.

Queen Inmok meets Yi Deok Hyeong outside of the palace to ask him to help her not only for Yeong Chang but also Gwang Hae. Princess Jeong Myeong (Jung Chan Bi) and prince Yeong Chang slips out of the palace changing into ordinary clothes to watch wrestling competition because the royal banquet was canceled. Queen returned to the palace finds her son's room is empty. She misunderstands Gwang Hae who was absence and Queen In Mok's father even incurs the king's wrath questioning his whereabouts that day. Queen In Mok shows Jung Myung the wedding ceremonial robe made for her wedding. The princess is shocked at the surprising news but the mother insists that she can only save her little brother. Doek Hyung goes to meet Chief Hong and Minister Kang to make one of their sons as the future royal son-in-law. Joo Won and In Woo overheard the conversation of them are also shocked.

Queen In Mok's father and prince Yeong Chang are branded as a rebel before selection of king's son-in-law for princess Jeongmyeong. The princess felt dizzy again because of the scorching sun rushes to her little brother but he is already caught by Lee Yi Cheom and palace guards. Yi Cheom leads the rebellion conspiracy. He fabricates a document which the seven concubines sons attacked people moving sliver on a carrier to scrape up the money for helping the young prince to the throne. King finally sends Yeong Chang into exile. The siblings who believed to be granted permission to leave together are separated by the lady attendants as they are outside the palace and the two wails loudly.

Naeuiwon(a palace pharmacy during Joseon dynasty) diary is found in Deok Hyeong's house where the servant being removed from office packs for moving. He pays a court physician visit and he finds out the late king was poisoned to death. In Injeongjeon, a sheep's dead body without horn and tail is found. The King tremble s with rage reading a letter written that Gwang Hae is not owner of the thorn according to prophecy of Nam Sa Go. Queen In Mok tries to send Jeong Myeong far away to save her with tears in her eyes, "Leave as far away as possible and live hiding until I find you. The King will kill you someday. Jeong Myeong and a court lady Choi arrives at a ferry. The court lady lets the Princess on board alone and she is standing there with gunpowder from another ship laden with it. She explodes gunpowder when Lee Yi Cheom and the other guards get nearer to the ferry. The Princess wails miserably over the shocking scene.

Gwang Hae become aware of someone who is the actual influence denounces Gae Shi who acted as another's tool killing the Prince and the Princess. Jeong Myeong encountered terrible weather after days of floating upon the sea on the small boat unluckily is rescued by a slave ship and the girl dressed in male attire is sold into sulfur mine slavery in Nagasaki, Japan.

Kim Gae Shi orders Lee Yi Cheom to kill himself before she takes her own life but he rather points knife to her throat saying that he will have it all. Gwang Hae tires to appease Lee Deok Hyeong explaining about someone pulls wires from behind to kill the last king and his brother and sister. But he gives a flat refusal to his suggestion saying that winning by any means necessary is tyranny and barbarism. Ja Kyung threatens the mine owner to help Jeong Myeong to stay the place and the Princess decides to live. In the tenth year of the Gwang Hae's accession, the King feels really great about the established Hawgidogam (a national R&D organization for firearm). And Hong Joo Won is lost in deep thinking. Meanwhile, Ja Kyung is desperately looking for Hwa Yi (the princess) just before another volcano eruption. He smiles at her helping a peer up in flames.

Princess Jeong Myeong adopted to the new surroundings concealing her identity earns her wings by the sulfur mine owner. She wins his confidence again as she helps to traffic impure sulfur to a merchant from Joseon. A leader of the group who Hwai questioned orders his subordinates to dump all sulfur lumps into the sea on their way back. Gwang Hae orders Joo Won to smuggle sulfur into the country from Japan where he will be sent as a member of Joseon Tongsinsa (a specific type of diplomatic delegation and its chief envoys from Joseon to Japan). Hwai decides to go together with the mine owner and Ja Kyung for sulfur traffic in Edo to find a member of the Joseon diplomatic delegation can help her to go back to the country. In Edo, Hwai searching for a man from Joseon finds Joo Won and his man waiting for a smuggler in a tavern.

Hawi asks Marno, the sulfur mine owner, to let Hong Joo Won meet Idachi, a business magnate and sulfur smuggler. He knows Hawi tries to run away to Joseon, but he decides to help the slave who have played a large role for his business until now. Eventually, Joo Won and Jeong Myeong close a business deal with the wealthy merchant. Gwang Hae runs at full speed along the narrow mountain path in the middle of the night. A group of volunteers swear allegiance to the King who asks them to undertake an highly dangerous mission. Hawi leads Joo Won and other guards to a ferry for the traffic in sulfur. But they are caught in the act of the illicit traffic. She takes Joo Won hostage threatening him with a knife, "I will take your blame on myself. Tell them you also sucked in by me. You will be fine because you are Joseon delegation. You have to save me because I have to go to the country." She throws the knife away.

Episode 10: Splendid Politics Episode 10

Hong Joo Won hands Yi Ja kyung a key of prison where Hawi is fettered in. He decides to take the distrained sulfur into dock while the male slave saves her from the jail. The guard of Joo Won sets fire to a warehouse to lure soldiers into a trap and Ja Kyung watches his opportunity to extricate Hawi out of danger. Joo Won reaches a crossroad where he has to decide to leave with the sulfur or to save her as the delegation is about to make an early start due to bad weather. Princess Jeong Myeong wails miserably watching the ships moving gradually farther away. At the moment, she finds a ferryboat carrying Joo Won approaches slowly toward her. Jeong Myeong draws a sword as there is a sense of someone approaching when she comes into Joo Won's house. But she is rather threatened by Kang In Woo. He notices that she disguises herself as a man.
